Netflix App for HoloLens Case Study

Design Challenge

Design a Netflix concept for the HoloLens

Project Background

This was an opportunity to learn more about UI design for augmented reality/virtual reality.

I knew nothing about the HoloLens at the start, but over the project's 2 weeks, I can at least say I knew more than before.

"What the heck is a HoloLens?"

After Google searches, YouTube tech demos, and many visits to the Microsoft site, I learned the HoloLens is an AR headset that places computer-generated images in the field of view. Unlike virtual reality (VR), AR does not obscure user vision.

It also comes with a hefty price tag. Yikes.

User Awareness

Market Research:
I sought market studies regarding AR and VR tech; there were promising projections of software and hardware sales.

There was also, however, a lack of knowledge or interest in the general American population.

From my interview with an AR/VR developer:
"3 or 4 years from now, the HoloLens should be more available to the mass market. Most people who own this now are either developers or wealthy people."

Surveys:
I sent out a Google Form survey to gauge consumer familiarity with Netflix and AR/VR technology.

Because I would need to keep Netflix branding consistent for potential designs, I excluded individuals unfamiliar with it.

Tom "the Persona" Jones:
Tom's a millenial. He's a cool dude who likes cool things. He thinks Netflix is pretty cool. He occasionally hears about AR/VR tech, doesn't know much, but he thinks the HoloLens is pretty sweet, too.

Research Takeaways

  • A Netflix app for the HoloLens needs to be familiar and interactive enough to justify buying a HoloLens.

  • The selling point would be the spatial aspects of the HoloLens, followed by the gesture-based system.

  • The gesture-based system needs reinforcement for new users, especially for Netflix-specific controls.
